What is Materials Management

Materials Management is the process of removing spoil from construction sites during earthwork or groundwork process. The includes the removal of any rubble, waste or rubbish created or uncovered. Materials Management can also be referred to as ‘Muck-Away’ and this can be classed into 3 categories; inert, hazardous and non-hazardous.

Inert Muck Away – this is waste that isn’t likely to affect any other matter that it comes into contact with, including, hardcore, soil and rubble.

Hazardous Muck Away – this is waste that has properties that make it harmful to human health and the environment.

Non-Hazardous Muck Away – this a collection of different waste products that are not likely to be harmful to the environment or human health.

To classify the material that you have produced on site you can use a soil sample kit or get in touch with us and we’d be happy to discuss your options.

Once the waste has been classified and excavated the next stage is removal and disposal, the experts at Recycling 1st Ltd have an extensive knowledge and supply chain throughout the UK for clean and contaminated soils. For all material projects we can offer on-site management to ensure the works go ahead as planned, including traffic management and duty of care documentation. Here at Recycling 1st Ltd we offer the full service, from cradle-to-grave.

When it comes to Materials Management, please ensure you test any soil that could potentially be removed from site. It is beneficial for all parties concerned to ensure the correct disposal route is used. If you don’t have analysis for the soil, don’t worry, we can help with that, check out of our soil sampling page for more information on the tests and analysis we can provide for you.

On-Site Management

Our on-site Materials Management presence will ensure the works go to plan and that all duty of care documentation is taken care of. Relationships are key and we ensure that only approved suppliers are used for our works, this includes materials management. For our contaminated soils, we have extensive knowledge of the disposal locations that can accept only certain types of material and we will only ever use fully compliant hauliers with full background checks having taken place. Our on-site management service can have many benefits in addition to just ensuring the works run correctly and to plan, with our experience we may be able to identify waste types on site that may prove harmful and potentially contaminate the stockpiled material, this is another cost-effective service that we can offer. All documentation is accessible on our portal including all compliance and duty of care documentation.
